My Journey Through the Airwaves: From U-Tech to Podcasting and Beyond

It began with a microphone, a one-hour lunchtime slot, and a heart full of ambition. My first radio gig at the University of Technology, (UTech,) in Kingston, Jamaica, (then C.A.S.T) from the dorm room of a student leader, was not just a casual stint—it was the spark that ignited a lifelong passion for broadcasting.

Nestled in the vibrant energy of campus life, I found myself behind the mic, speaking to students, sharing music, and discovering the power of voice. That hour may have been brief, but its impact was profound. It taught me that radio was not just about sound—it was about connection, communication and “edutainment.”

Years later, that humble beginning evolved into something far greater. I found myself in Bayonne, New Jersey, hosting television shows on Cablevision as a student intern while pursuing my first degree in Journalism/Communications at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey. The transition from radio to television was exhilarating. The camera added a new dimension to storytelling, and I embraced the challenge of engaging audiences not just with my voice, but with my presence. From interviews to cultural segments, I learned to navigate the visual medium with the same authenticity that guided my radio days.

But my love for radio never waned. I returned to the airwaves with “Tropical Mixon WNJR New Jersey Radio, a show that celebrated Caribbean rhythms and stories. It was more than entertainment—it was a bridge between cultures, a celebration of heritage, and a reminder of where I came from. Each episode was a tribute to the sounds and spirit of the islands, and it allowed me to reconnect with listeners in a deeply personal way.

Now, as I am preparing to launch my podcast Adolescence: What Every Parent, Teacher and Teen Should Know, I feel a sense of completion. This new venture is not just another show—it is a full-circle moment. It blends the intimacy of radio, the storytelling of television, and the freedom of podcasting into one powerful platform. Adolescence: What Every Parent, Teacher and Teen should know will be a space for voices that matter, stories that inspire, and chronicles that reflect the pulse of our voices.

From that first one-hour lunchtime broadcast at the university campus of UTech in Kingston, Jamaica, to this new chapter, my journey has been one of growth, exploration, and purpose. Broadcasting, and now broadcasting as a healthcare professional has given me a voice, but more importantly, it has given me a mission—to inform, to uplift, and to connect. And as I step into this next phase, I

carry with me the echoes of every mic I have spoken into, every story I have told, and every listener who has tuned in.
